Learn to Play American Mahjong: 3rd - 5th Graders

Our mission is to introduce young learners to the captivating world of American Mahjong. Through our comprehensive curriculum, students will not only learn how to play Mahjong but also develop critical cognitive skills that will benefit them academically and personally.

Mahjong is Beneficial for Young Minds

Basic Rules of American Mahjong

American Mahjong, distinct from its Chinese counterpart, is a tile-based game played with a set of 152 tiles. The game involves four players and typically includes several rounds. Here are the fundamental rules and components of the game:

Tiles and Suits - The game uses 152 tiles, including:

Suits
- Dots, Bams, and Craks

Honors
- Winds (East, South, West, North) and Dragons (Red, Green, White).

Flowers
and Seasons

Jokers

Objective
- The goal is to form a complete hand by creating specific tile combinations called “Mahjong Hands” based on the current year’s official Mahjong card, which details allowable hands for scoring.

Setup - Players each draw 13 tiles. The player designated as the dealer (East Wind) starts with 14 tiles and discards one tile to begin play.

Gameplay

Drawing and Discarding - Players take turns drawing tiles from the wall (a set-aside pool of tiles) and discarding unwanted tiles.

Building a Hand - Players aim to create valid hands as listed on the Mahjong card, which can include pairs, pungs (three of a kind), kongs (four of a kind), and specific sequences.

Using Jokers - Jokers can substitute for any tile in specific combinations, except for pairs.

Calling for Discarded Tiles - Players may “call” a discarded tile to complete a set if it completes a pair, pung, or kong, or enables a Mahjong.

Winning the Game

A player declares “Mahjong” when they complete a valid hand from the Mahjong card. The round ends, and points are scored based on the complexity of the hand and any bonuses.

Scoring

Points are tallied according to the combinations and rules specified on the Mahjong card, with additional points for certain conditions and tile arrangements.

Benefits

Mahjong is not just a game; it is an excellent tool for cognitive development in young learners. Here are several reasons why Mahjong is highly beneficial for brain development, logic, and strategic thinking:

Cognitive Skills Development

Mahjong requires players to remember complex sequences and patterns, enhancing memory and recall abilities. The need to track tiles and plan moves promotes active mental engagement, crucial for cognitive growth.

Logical Reasoning

Players must analyze available tiles and anticipate opponents’ moves, fostering logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Deciding which tiles to keep or discard involves critical assessment and decision-making.

Strategic Thinking

Mahjong encourages strategic planning and foresight. Players must think several steps ahead, considering not only their hand but also the potential hands of others. This strategic depth helps develop foresight and adaptability.

Social Interaction and Cooperation

Playing Mahjong with peers enhances social skills and teamwork. It teaches patience, turn-taking, and the importance of observing others’ actions, which are valuable interpersonal skills.

Cultural Awareness

Learning Mahjong introduces children to cultural heritage and traditions. Understanding the game’s history and variations fosters appreciation for diverse cultural practices.
